In the heart-pounding science fiction drama Signs , M.Night Shyamalan shows how a minister struggling with faith learns how seeing is not believing, but believing is seeing. Star Mel Gibson plays Graham, an ex-minister who loses his faith when his wife dies in a tragic accident. Then he soon learns he needs to believe and have faith.
In the movie Signs , Graham and his two children Morgan ( Rory Culkin) his son, and Bo (Abigail Breslin) his daughter live on a farm in Pennsylvania with Graham's brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix). Strange crop signs begin to appear in corn fields. At first Graham thinks somebody is just trying to pull a joke, then later suspects something strange is going on. Bo would never drink her water. She always had an excuse for why she wouldn't drink it. Either there was a hair in a water or there was amoeba in the water. Then, one night while the family was watching TV, a bird was flying and fell dead in mid-air. Nobody knew what in the world was going on. Morgan had a baby monitor, which they used to communicate with the aliens, but it was only one way.
The main star Mel Gibson plays Graham, a father and ex-minister does a great job of portraying the role of a man who loses his faith but through life experiences he learns he needs to believe in God to have faith. Rory Culkin who plays Morgan, the son of Graham is always protecting his little sister. He knows without a doubt that the aliens are coming and he will do anything he can to protect her. Abagial Breslin who plays Bo, the daughter of Graham is a very quiet girl. She always listened to her brother and her father. Bo was with her brother, she knew that there were aliens. Joaquin Phoenix plays Uncle Merrill was an outcast. He stayed at the top of his brothers barn. When it came down to it Merrill always watched out for Bo and Morgan.
Suspenseful and sad music was played throughout the movie. When Graham was having the flashbacks of his wife the music was sad. The music was suspenseful when the signs showed up in the cornfields, and when the aliens where about to invade the house. In my opinion the music played and important part and it went well with all the scenes in the movie.
The theme or the message of the movie Signs is that you need to believe in God to have faith. Graham loses all his faith when his wife dies. The flashbacks Graham had of his wife, I think it was meant to happened and that God wanted to test his faith. The night the family was hiding in the basement, Graham hoped they wouldn't be killed by the aliens. Morgan had an asthma attack, but with Graham believing in God Morgan fought through it. As Graham goes through different challenges he soon learns that he has to believe not only in himself but God too.
